From the beginning, Diadem has involved various forms of divination in our creative practice. We use it as a means of creating instant compositions, both as a form of graphic score and as chance operations which help us unlock creative ideas. It is also a focus for other aspects of our art practice and, of course, a tool for the exploration of consciousness.
The two pieces presented here used different types of compositional structures - the first a set of divination cards that Aja created, the second a combination of the cards and a loose structural experiment.
This release features in its artwork a different form of divinationally employed graphic score. We created a large series of transparencies depicting images, words and forms of musical notation each contained within a slightly off-center circle. The transparencies may be placed in any position, thus overlapping one-another and complicating their reading. We leave it to the performers to assign meaning, position, relationship or any other perameter upon the performance of these scores. We also encourage others to experiment with performing the transparencies included with their CD, or otherwise use or extend this concept.
